There are many great things about French cinema, and I’m sure that someone more cultured than myself could tell you about all of them. Me, I can attest to one of them: the gratuitous graphic nudity. Indeed, the shining moment for me in Farewell, My Queen (French title: Les Adieux à la Reine) was the sorta full-frontal scene featuring French actress Lea Seydoux nude. Known to international audiences mostly for her minor role in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and even minorer role in the horrifically-spelled Inglourious Basterds, she has a much broader career spanning many more nude scenes in her native country.
We see Lea Seydoux naked in this movie towards the end when she’s ordered to undress by Queen Marie-Antoinette, played by Diane Kruger. She obeys and is helped out of her fifty layers of 18th century courtly garments garments by an old hag. When she is finally down to nothing at all, fully nude, she sort of just hangs out, covering and uncovering herself, while the cameraman gets all of his shots. I guess I could complain about it being fairly brief and also being the only one by her in the film, but the director has clearly gone for quality over quantity in this, and I can support that.
Overall, the film is a pretty good watch if, like me, you’re interested in history as much as on-screen nudity. Combining the two into a lesbian substory-driven dramatization of the hedonistic Palace of Versailles during the French Revolution was a nice touch on the part of the filmmakers. The video and pics are captured from the freshly-released blu-ray. Virginie Ledoyen also has a short full-frontal nude scene in the film, and I’ll be putting that up in the next post. But for now, you can find the clip and caps from the Lea Seydoux nude scene below.
